A former student wielding two handguns entered a school in the western part of the violence-plagued Brazilian city and opened fire, killing at least 11 students and wounding 18 more. Parents who arrived to pick up their students instead found a chaotic scene, with police helicopters landing nearby to ferry away the injured. One man told Al Jazeera he never thought such a shooting could happen in his country. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo reports from Rio de Janeiro.
Brazilian authorities say that a gunman opened fire in an elementary school in Rio de Janeiro and at least 13 people are dead. The gunman is among them, though it is not clear if he shot himself or was killed by police. (April 7)

The largest graffiti in the world painted by a woman has recently been unveiled in Rio De Janeiro. In the world of Street Art, which is dominated by men, a 19-year-old female artist, Luna Buschinelli, has created an enormous panel called “Stories” on the side of a public school in Rio’s downtown. It took Luna one month to create the image that covers 2,500 meters, (3,000 square yards) and has been submitted to the Guinness Book of Records. Luna has never taken a drawing course, but has created images since her childhood. “The work represents a mother who cannot read, but still manages to tell her children many fantastic stories that build their dreams.” CGTN’s Caren Moy reports on the artist and what the mural has come to mean to students at the school.
